Tile flooring installation is low maintenance, durable, and modern. Tile is a versatile material designed for various applications for both floors and walls. It is often the preferred choice for heavy traffic areas and is available in a variety of colors, textures, finishes, and sizes available. Two primary types of tile include ceramic and natural stone. The most common size tile used in the United States is 12×12 while 4×4 tile squares are selected for smaller living spaces such as bathrooms or entry ways.

Ceramic Tile Flooring

The production of a ceramic tile flooring involves high temperatures and varied kilns in the manufacturing processes. Making minor adjustments to substances and processes result in varying types of tiles such as brick, glass, cement, terra-cotta, and many others.

Ceramic is the most commonly used tile due to its affordability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Ceramics tiles are offered in both porcelain or non-porcelain variations. In general, ceramic tiles made with 50 percent of white dust are porcelain. Porcelain tiles are typically found in private residences and are naturally durable and crack resistant. Non-porcelain tile flooring is very economical and affordable. These tiles are found in apartment or public buildings. Both types of ceramics come with a glaze or unglazed finish. Glazed tiles are much preferred because of their stain and scratch resistance.

Natural Stone

Natural stone tiles are sourced from quarries, cut, and professionally finished. Frequently used natural stones include marbles, granites, limestone, and slate.

Granite is the most durable of natural stone, is scratch resistant and is usually preferred in high traffic areas such as kitchens or bathrooms. Marble is much more porous than granite while slate is very durable and recommended for kitchen surfaces or flooring.

Other natural stone alternatives include limestone, onyx, and sandstone. Limestone is prone to stains and scratches so it is not generally recommended for high traffic areas. Limestone is available in various natural shades ranging from warm browns to causal taupes. Travertine tile flooring is a type of limestone that is more porous and requires extra care for the maintenance but is available in both light and dark shades for spaces requiring more unique color palettes. Is tile flooring right for you? Tile is a durable flooring option that stands up to wear in high traffic areas. Choose the size of your tile based on your space. Opt for larger tiles in smaller spaces and smaller tiles in larger spaces. Tile flooring is very low maintenance and easy to care for.
