Floor Refinishing Myths

Refinishing your hardwood floors is a great way to preserve your existing hardwoods and give your  house a new look. If taken care of properly, solid hardwood floors can last for many, many years and can  be refinished multiple times!

  1. Myth: Long term finish maintenance is necessary

If your flooring expert tells you to recoat your newly refinished floors every two to three years, drop  them and call us. Today’s flooring finishes are so durable that done correctly, a professionally refinished  floor should last for 10-20 years, depending on how well the floor is taken care of afterwards.

  1. Myth: Hardwood floors can only be refinished once

If installed and maintained correctly, solid hardwood floors can last for hundreds of years. They can also  be re-sanded and refinished multiple times over their lifetime, allowing you to change the look of the  new house you just bought, or change the stain you liked ten years ago.

  1. Myth: Dustless means dust free

When refinishing a hardwood floor, one of the very first steps is to sand down the top layer of  hardwood. While modern technology allows flooring professionals to drastically decrease the amount of  dust left in the air and on the furniture, no refinishing job will ever be 100% dust free. There are some  steps you can take to ensure your personal belongings remain dust free during your project:

  • Use plastic sheeting to cover cabinets, countertops, and other immobile items
  • Talk to your flooring professional about furniture moving services
  • Pack up small, personal belongings before your flooring project begins
